Tips to Treat UTI at Home

Urinary tract infections or UTI affects several millions of people every year. This condition can affect both men and women. However, the susceptibility of a woman developing a UTI is a lot more than men. It is primarily because they have a smaller urethra. Though traditionally UTIs can be conveniently cured with antibiotics, there are also some natural home remedies that you can use for curing UTI at home.

1. Try cranberries
Cranberries have an ingredient, which can prevent the bacteria from annexing themselves to the urinary tract wall. More research is needed on this, but you can certainly lower your risk of developing UTIs by adding cranberry supplements, dried cranberries, or unsweetened cranberry juice to your diet.

2. Keep yourself hydrated
One of the easiest and, indeed, the most effective ways to cure and prevent UTIs is to keep yourself well hydrated with fluids. Water is certainly a very effective remedial treatment for curing UTI at home. It ensures that the urinary tract organs eliminate all the waste from the body efficiently, without robbing the body of the electrolytes and nutrients.

Further, when you keep yourself hydrated, your urine is diluted. This makes it quicker for the urine to travel out of the system. Consequently, the bacteria find it hard to reach the cells, which line the urinary organs and trigger an infection.

As such, there is no fixed recommendation on the quantity of water you should consume every day as it varies from one person to another. However, on average, you can drink at least six to eight glasses of water every day.

3. Do not hold your pee
A primary sign of a UTI infection is experiencing pain while urinating. It may sometimes feel tempting to put off using a bathroom, even when there is an urgency. However, experts recommend using the bathroom every two or three hours, or at least anytime you feel the urge to answer nature’s call. When you hold back your urine, it may lead to bacteria multiplication.

When you have UTI, you may feel the urge to pee, but there is nothing to release when you go. To overcome this discomfort, you need to add more fluids to your diet.

4. Include probiotic foods or supplements in your diet
Probiotics are good bacteria. These are incredibly beneficial for maintaining a healthy immune system and gut, and they can help keep the harmful bacteria at bay and simultaneously prevent or treat any recurrent UTIs. A prevalent probiotic, lactobacillus, is known to guard women against UTIs. There is an array of probiotics available at health food stores or grocery stores.
